Sue Edwards grew up near the shores of Lake Erie in Northwest Pennsylvania. She was always interested in art and music in its many forms. At 3 years of age she announced after seeing a program on the life of Itzhak Perlman, that she was going to play the violin... and after reminding everyone for many years of her goal, she achieved it. In school, she always made room in her schedule for art and music. She won regional awards for mechanical drawing, played french horn in the band and violin in two youth orchestras. She began teaching music in high school, and in college, she was encouraged to take Suzuki Violin Teacher Training. She first taught in Harrisonburg, VA and then Syracuse, New York and organized many events with other teachers in the area. She was president of the Central New York Association of Music Teachers for 5 years, also receiving the Ruth Edson Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Syracuse Music Community from Civic Morning Musicals. During this time, she was a regular participant in the Open Figure Drawing group at the Westcott Center. After moving to Charlotte, NC in 2014, she had a year to explore other areas of the arts and began taking pottery classes in addition to continuing her love of figure drawing. She quickly progressed, and while learning traditional pottery forms, began working on sculpture during figure drawing sessions using her own homemade tools. With encouragement she began selling, entering shows, and winning prizes for her art work. With the continuing success, she is incorporating a love of knitting texture, slip trailing, and underglaze painting, filling sketchbooks full of ideas, and working hard to fill commissioned orders.
Being motivated by winning a prize at her first judged show, as well as selling the piece that was shown, she was encouraged to join Carolina Clay Guild in Charlotte, NC, Mooresville Arts Guild in Mooresville, NC, and the Blue Ridge Potters Guild in Roanoke, Va. Each of these organizations have provided her with continuing education, encouragement, and mentorship from well-known artists in the area, pushing her forward.
